In the late 1960's, Joyce Byers, an amateur artist with a degree in fashion design started making what has come to be known as Byers' Choice Carolers out of her desire to create holiday decorations that showed a respect for timeless traditions and her own memories of Christmas. Today a team of 180 artisans in Pennsylvania handcraft those same creations that started many years ago. What began as a hobby for a young girl named Barbara Annalee Davis, grew into a family business-the business of doll making. A young adult in the 1930's, Annalee created puppets and dolls. She sold her dolls though various craft outlets in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Years later, after her marriage to Charles 'Chip' Thorndike, her hobby transformed itself into the family business that is now considered an industry innovator.

Isabel Scherer Bloom, a native Midwesterner, grew up in Davenport, IA where she spent most of her life. The Merck Family's Old World Christma,s founded by Tim and Beth Merck, is credited with revitalizing the art of mouth-blown fine glass ornaments as a result of their reintroducing figural designs to the United States in 1979. Each figural glass ornament produced for The Merck Family's Old World Christmas is hand crafted in age-old tradition using the same techniques that originated in the 1800's. Molten glass is mouth-blown into finely carved molds available only to the Merck Family's Old World Christmas, before a hot solution of liquid silver is poured inside. The ornaments are then hand-painted and glittered in a series of labor-intensive steps to achieve the beautiful creations.

Grown at the foot of Blue Mountain in Central Pennsylvania, these gourds are dashing touch of natural ingenuity. Because the gourds are a natural product the size, shape and color will vary with each piece. Many styles are now painted or carved in the shapes of figures like ghosts or cats, snowmen, santas and rabbits!
